Valentine's Day: Not Just for Couples Anymore

Written by Krista Mancarella & Colleen Sullivan

With Valentine's Day upon us, there is the inevitable outside pressure to show love in a certain way. The typical way to celebrate Valentine's Day with flowers, chocolates, and teddy bears is still expected by a few, but showing love doesn't have to be expensive or focused on material things. Valentine's Day is about expressing love, which is not solely reserved for romantic relationships. This designated day can be an inspiration to share love with anyone in your life who you want to acknowledge and appreciate, including yourself. It's about taking ownership of your happiness and doing things that make you feel good.

A Day for All Types of Connections

For years, the trendy Galentine's Day has allowed women to get together the Day before Valentine's Day and celebrate friendship, a perfect example that this holiday can be anything you want. Parents may want to spend the day showering their children with love, best friends may celebrate over dinner, and siblings may wish to recognize their strong bonds through a call or text. There may be someone you haven't talked to in years, so you decide to reach out to them to remind them they are still in your thoughts.

A Day for Self-Love

Valentine's Day is a great reminder to celebrate and nurture the relationship with yourself. Feel empowered to spoil yourself by doing your favorite things or slow down and recharge your batteries; reflect on the positive qualities that make you, you! Whether indulging in a spa treatment, relishing a delicious meal, or simply curling up with a good book, remember that self-love isn't a buzzword; it is necessary for self-confidence and well-being.

A Day to Pay it Forward

Make this day more meaningful by volunteering! Expressing compassion for others can fill us with joy while spreading love and kindness to those in need. Search local organizations where you can give back. Some may be hosting Valentine's Day-themed activities. Whether donating time to a local animal shelter, serving meals, or helping a neighbor, contributing to your community allows you to connect with others and feel part of something larger than yourself.

Know That It's okay to Feel a Little Bit Sad

Valentine's Day is not happy for all of us, and that is okay! There are many reasons this day can be a sad or painful day for some. There is no need to hide your feelings; acknowledge them and permit yourself to feel whatever you feel. Gently remind yourself to also focus on the positives and celebrate them. Sometimes, focusing on others can help us feel less alone, empowered, and

Whether you spend the day indulging in self-care, spending time with friends, or trying something new, remember that love comes in many forms, and none of them require a romantic partner to be meaningful.  Love is something we all need!
